Something written way back in 1982... applicable today... Diabetes is 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, for the rest of my life.... I am responsible for managing the unmanageable, coontrolling the uncontrollable, and coping with the incurable ---- my diabetes
Likewise, there are three areas -- important for management of my Type 2 diabetes:
INSULIN RESISTANCE (wherein muscle beta cells don't easily take in glucose)... medicine often prescribed is thiazolidinediones (TSD's).. they are insulin sensitizers. side effects/damage to heart & liver...expensive, weight gain and hypoglycemia.........ACTOS, and AVANDIA...)
INSULIN DEFICIENCY (where my pancreas doesn't make enough insulin).... medicine prescribed is Sulfonylureas...(Amaryl).... Glimipiride...a pancreas stimulator ///side effects are weight gain and hypo-glycemia...
and INCREASED HEPATIC GLUCOSE OUTPUT....(that's where my liver releases too much glucose.... !!! medicine prescribed is Biguanides...(Glucophage) Metformin...reduced liver glucose output...improved insulin sensitivity in the liver..and in muscle and fat cells! /// side effect gastro-intestional problems at higher doses...plus Lactic Acidosis...)
These are the three areas... several options in the diabetes toolbox to make changes.... healthy eating, physical activity, and oral medicines!
